The Big Apple Tweed Ride

On a warm and lovely evening in the East Village, people from all walks of life gathered at The Penny Farthing for an intimate event hosted by The Brooklyn Circus decked out in their finest threads. From pearls to seersucker, bow ties to tweed, fans of The Big Apple Tweed Ride attended the group’s spring social, Bow Ties and Crumpets. The night proved to be an eclectic and visual feast and if you didn’t know otherwise, you could have easily mistaken the year to be 1938 just by looking at the guests. The evening began with a screening of the documentary From the Land Comes the Cloth, a story about the luxury fabric Harris Tweed and its handwoven history. A wonderful live Jazz performance by Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra provided a beautiful backdrop to the delicious traditional British meat pies that were baked by Myers of Keswick.

Socializing and enjoying the company of well-dressed individuals seemed to be on everyone’s agenda and it was definitely mission accomplished. A night like this wouldn’t be complete of course without awarding the most distinguished guests of Bow Ties and Crumpets, prizes were given out to the “Most Tweed Spirited Male and Lass as well as the most Breathtaking Accessory” just to name a few of the honors. If you missed this event fear not, you can still be a part of the Big Apple Tweed’s annual Fall Tweed Ride where all proceeds benefit charity. For those who are unfamiliar, a Tweed Ride is an event where a group of cyclists dressed in vintage or traditional British cycling attire ride together through a defined route in an effort to recreate the spirit of an era from the past.
